The operating system labels it as deleted, and believes it is gone (this way things are less resource-intensive than actually removing the file by way of complete deletion) until such file gets physically overwritten with data from other files. When a file is removed – and no matter why and how it happened – this information is never deleted from the storage device irreversibly.
